There's
little or no point in rewriting what others have written before. Much
of it is available on the Internet and the rest can be found in reference
libraries. It's worth mentioning, however, the Durham & Northumberland
County Councils' "Keys
to the past" web site which has an excellent potted history
of Sandhoe
Parish, including references to Anick,
and the Bastle
house there.
The web site also has an excellent range of scalable maps showing
the development of the village between 1856 and the present day.

In
May 1926 Anick Cottage, (now known as Anick Hall), was occupied by
the novelist, Rosamund
Lehmann, her husband and the Hon Wogan Phillips. This menage
a trois lasted through the summer of that year. Many of the Bloomsbury
set visited them, including Lytton Strachey and Rosamund's sister,
the actress, Beatrix Lehmann. There is a fuller account of these relationships
Rosamund Lehmann's novels have been republished by Virago Press in
recent years. |
